Harmony Aguirre is a current senior at Clairemont High School, and she has lived most of her life in San Diego. Before starting her freshman year, Harmony had to move to Mexico due to medical reasons, but she came back sophomore year and is ready to finish her last year in high school.

“I am really nervous and excited to be a senior this year, I hope that this is the best year of my high school career,” she said.

After spending a year in Mexico, she decided to pursue a career in the medical field. An aunt of Harmony’s gave her the opportunity to volunteer with the Red Cross.

She determined that medicine was her calling after those few months volunteering.

“There is just something about having the ability to save a life and make a difference at the same time that makes all the hard work of becoming a doctor worth every minute of it,” she said.

Harmony’s Aunt Erica is a doctor and she runs a delegation of the Red Cross in Mexico, and she was a huge inspiration in Harmony’s life. Her Aunt Erica was able to help her decide what she wanted to do and what she was going to do to get it.

Her mom and dad are also a huge support and motivation for her. She does not know what she would do without them and their unconditional support.

“My parents are very supportive of everything I do, they want me to be the best that I can be and they believe in me so much, I am really trying my hardest to make them proud,” she said.

From the moment her mother, father, and aunt helped her work with the Red Cross, she was so intrigued watching the doctors work for hours on a patient and then care for the patients with such attentiveness. She thought that attentiveness and commitment were just what she needed to get through medical school.

“Seeing the doctors in action and spending one on one time with them just talking to them about what they had to do to get where they were and how it has been so far made me really want to pursue the same career,” Harmony said.

After graduation in June, Harmony will attend San Diego Mesa Community College and then transfer out to finish her college education at the University of California Berkeley. She will attend medical school at the University of Massachusetts and will try to get her residency done at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“Berkeley has always been a dream to me, and although I will not be going for all 4 years, I am excited about just going, I am also excited for medical school in Boston. I know several years of very vigorous work are ahead of me but I know for a fact that all of it will all be worth it in the end,” she said.
