Clarissa Iglesias is a tenth grader at Clairemont high school. She has realized several things about herself in the past year.

“Last year I was just a freshman, and I wasn’t ready for high school. I just didn’t want to come to school.”

Last year was her first year of high school. One thing she learned about herself is that when she is determined to do something, it will get done on time.

That does not only go for school assignments. She uses this strategy for anything done.

She works harder in order to finish anything on time to avoid stress later. This goes for homework, essays, classwork, and also real-life events.

She has always been considered a good student, and it was not easy. In elementary she always believed as if anything could be improved and done better with time and effort.

She goes by the saying of, “If you set your mind to it, it is possible.”

Although anything can be accomplished on someone’s own, she had a lot of support from her family. Especially her mom, which was her teacher when she wasn’t even old enough to be in school yet.

Clarissa’s mom is currently a first-grade teacher. She has been a teacher for over 20 years now and has taught different grade levels and languages.

Her mom had the most impact on her life more than anyone else at the time. For example, her mom taught her how to read fluently in Spanish and English before she went to preschool.

At the age Clarissa is now, she has learned a lot from others. Whether it’s friends, family, or even celebrities she has experienced growth within herself and others.

She believes that observing is a good way to learn. Basically what that means is she has seen and gone through stuff that made her wiser.

Right now, she does not know what she will be doing after high school. She has her mind set on going to college and studying for a good career.

One skill she has had since she was in elementary school is her ability to read and write. During those years, she was always a few reading levels higher than her grade.

When she was young, Clarissa did not understand why she was good at reading since she did not like to read. The thing is, her mom would always read to her and help her improve her reading skills, therefore she always had help available at home.

Now, she realizes the reason she probably was good at reading and writing is that she is a verbal learner. All this means is that she learns faster by reading information.

This also means that she learns better by typing. Lastly, she learns by talking something out step by step rather than watching a video, for example, in order to learn new information.

By spending a year in journalism, she learned how to write in a different format, since she only knew how to write basic essays. She expects to learn to be able to put words in different ways and be able to expand her vocabulary.
