At Clairemont High School, many students struggle managing a singular club; however, Michael Tesis, a senior at Clairemont High School  has created and managed the Speech and Debate clubs.

He started the Speech and Debate club on campus due to his insistence that the school didn’t have any good clubs that students were actually interested in. He planned to solve this  by providing the Clairemont community with a wider variety of options to choose from. Several of these activities do revolve around the atmosphere of academics, but also are fun activities for the participants.

Tesis, a 4.0 GPA student, likes to spend his time giving back to the Clairemont community. In terms of his Forensics club, which is another name for Speech and Debate, as well “I believe that students should have a sound mind, a sound body, and a strong spirit,” says Tesis. He started the club because he believed that the clubs currently present at Clairemont were simply not a priority to the staff and did not provide enough choices for the students. The Speech and Debate clubs meet on Wednesdays from 2:10 to 3:10 and also at lunch. The officers in the club are Kevin Kwik who is the communications director, Alex Middleton is a secretary, and Michael DeHut is the vice president.

In Tesis’ Speech and Debate club, students learn the various styles of debating on important world issues such as Lincoln-Douglass, Free-verse, European style, and several more. Also, in his clubs, he plans weekly trips with his members in order to get them to learn more about each other. He also helps students overcome barriers such as being afraid to speak.

With Michael Tesis’ boundless expressions of creativity and his gift for academic studies, who knows what brilliant contributions he will continue to make to our society in high school and beyond.
