Ever since 1970, when BMX was just starting out as a sport, there has been a bitter rivalry between bikers and skaters.

Skaters think that bikes aren’t meant for the streets, while bikers think that skaters tear up perfectly fine ramps and rails. BMX is better than skateboarding. The average skateboard costs $130 and the average BMX bike costs around $450. The upside to a BMX bike being more expensive is that it can last for over three years. A skateboard might last only three months according to most skaters.

Learning how to ride BMX is a lot easier to learn than skating. Most people already know how to ride a bike so getting the feel for the bike comes naturally. On the other hand, skateboarding is foreign to most people. The thought of taking your feet off the board can be pretty frightening for people who have never skated before.

The tricks you can perform on a BMX bike are simple and easy to master. For example, a bunny hop on a bike can take a rider a few hours to master. The equivalent to a bunny hop on a skateboard in an ollie, which can take months to learn.

You can hit 20 foot jumps on a BMX bike. Most people ride dirt jumps which can get really big and really fun. Skaters will say that because the jumps are so big you can get injured easier, but this isn’t the really the case. Last year in 2016, 64,500 U.S. teens were treated in the ER due to skateboard accidents. That’s about 175 people a day.

Even though there are fewer injuries in BMX, there are bigger jumps and the tricks are easier to learn. However, BMX riding still has a downfall. Skateboards were invented first, therefore more people want to ride a skateboard over a BMX bike because there’s a skateboard legacy.

BMX is overall a great sport. It gets you in shape and doesn’t get you involved with the wrong people. Become a biker because BMX can change your life.
