Sewage from the Tijuana River in Mexico has traveled to the beaches of San Diego, causing them to shut down from all the pollution and bacteria.E. Coli, Vibrio, Salmonella and several viruses and intestinal parasites have been found in the sewage. These bacteria have been known to cause issues ranging from diarrhea, to respiratory infections and even Meningitis.

According to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health Signs, warnings will be posted along the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and the Border Field State Park until bacteria levels return to normal. The Department strongly advises swimmers not to go into the sewage-contaminated water.

Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego have all filed a Clean Water Act lawsuit against the Federal Government. Hopefully by filing the lawsuit, the government can fund projects to treat the polluted water. The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) is currently working on ways to limit water pollution. “Everytime we go to the beach and go in the water, we are exposing ourselves to hundreds of terrible and disgusting diseases.” States Ariana Navarrette a student at Clairemont High School.
