While visuals are crucial to a good horror flick, few movies utilize sounds to their full potential. A Quiet Place takes that premise and  turns it on its head. The film focuses on a midwest family struggling to survive in a world of silence.  A Quiet Place is directed by John Krazinsky, who is best known as the goofy but kind-hearted Jim Halpert on NBC’s popular sitcom The Office. Krazinsky also stars as Lee Abbott, the father and main protagonist of the story. The film also stars Emily Blunt, Krazinsky’s actual wife, as Evelyn Abbott, the mother of the two Abbott children; Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe.)

A Quiet Place has absolutely dominated the box office, making over $173 million since opening on April sixth. This is despite having a budget of only $17-21 million. The film’s premise is simple; if you don’t make a sound, you will survive. The film has received positive reviews, earning a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Both critics and average viewers absolutely love the movie, with David Simms of the Atlantic saying,”A Quiet Place is an undoubtedly taxing affair for the nerves; fortunately, it’s also a deeply affecting one.” Common Sense Media said, ”This gripping, clever monster movie is one of those rare genre treats that seizes on a single, unique idea and executes it so perfectly and concisely that it elicits satisfying squeals of delight.”

Overall, A Quiet Place is a heavy hitting film that delivers on all fronts, and with a unique idea, great cast, and exceptional plot development, it is easily one of the years best films. “I thought it was super good,” said Lily Kaufman, a CHS senior. ”I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.”

A Quiet Place is a gripping and thrilling narrative that perfectly mixes monster-movie horror and familial turmoil, with a clever and original twist. It is definitely one of 2018’s best films so far.
