The average user of Uber, the transportation company that offers cheap and easy rides through their smartphone application, is unaware of the fact that they take advantage of and exploit their employees. Even though the riders are pleased with the “effortless” transportation, the drivers get paid significantly less than expected.

The average Uber driver is paid $15.68 per hour, just barely over minimum wage, which is eleven dollars per hour.  Riders’ decision to give their driver a tip is optional. Uber has yet to create a way to tip using the app itself. Therefore, earning tips is not a large portion of Uber employees’ revenue. Competitors like Lyft feature an option that leaves the rider 72 hours to tip their drivers after their last ride. If Uber added this tipping opportunity then drivers could potentially earn more.

In addition, many Uber drivers have another occupation and use Uber as a second way of income. Because of the simplicity of the job as a driver, having a main source of profit would be advised.

Drivers must cover their own gas, maintenance and insurance costs. While Uber employees are already earning such low income, this leaves employees with a broad cut out of their compensation since their main job is to drive. A former driver quotes, Not a very good place to work at, cut your rates too far to where you are unable to make a living, but expect you to deliver top-notch service to the customer that is impossible when you don’t pay enough to survive.

Because of the flexibility of the job, being a driver would be great for high school students! Unfortunately, Uber requires their drivers to be 21 years or older and have 3 years of driving experience. A freshman from CHS explains, “Although I am underage to work for Uber, I believe Uber should cover the drivers gas because they aren’t really earning their full compensation.”

Uber’s employees are left unsatisfied with their income because of the dent in their revenue. As a solution, the company could increase hourly rates or make tipping available on their app.
