The public criticizes Sea World after watching the infamous “Blackfish” film despite Sea World making improvements to their company and providing numerous benefits to wildlife.

In 2013, the propagandistic documentary “Blackfish” was released to the public.  Audiences watched the story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale who had a part in the deaths of two trainers.  The film targeted uneducated viewers, manipulating minds into believing information given by random scientists falsely introduced as marine biologists.  Even now in 2018, SeaWorld continues to suffer from the “Blackfish Effect.” Attendance is low, stock prices have declined, and negative publicity continues to increase every day despite the changes SeaWorld has already made.

Then in 2016 SeaWorld announced a major change within the corporation in response to “Blackfish”  and the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau they “halted  any further breeding of their captive killer whales.”  Further interaction between the killer whales and trainers was limited.

Michael Scarpuzzi, a trainer at SeaWorld stated, “We have altered how we care for, display and train these extraordinary animals...The care… has been made safer than ever.”  However, SeaWorld today still undergoes complaints from the public due to “Blackfish Effect” despite having made the improvements suggested by critics.

Those who disagree with SeaWorld based off the film “Blackfish”  should educate themselves on all the positive actions SeaWorld does for wildlife that the documentary ignores. SeaWorld is focused on four conservation areas. The first is the rescue of ill, injured and orphaned animals with over 31,000 rescued so far. Second, it funds spent “conserving wild animals and wild places, as well as supporting critical conservation work on every continent.  We partner with…organizations including National Wildlife Federation, World Wildlife Fund and The Nature Conservancy.” Furthermore, the multiple marine parks provide education to the public about numerous marine creatures. This type of education erases fear and opens minds. Critics have become so easily manipulated by the film “Blackfish”, that they cease to recognize the beneficial actions of SeaWorld that have been occurring since day one.

SeaWorld is a great organization that has not only been helping wildlife through research, funding  and their rescue team for decades, but also has become an improved organization upon listening to the public’s concerns. The corporation continues to suffer from society’s disapproval, and yet they have corrected many if not all issues as well as continued their beneficial work towards animals and their environments nationwide.

It is society’s responsibility now to educate themselves upon such beneficial actions and alter their manipulated opinions derived from the propaganda documentary “Blackfish”.  Through such education, changing of opinion, and attending the marine parks, the “Blackfish Effect” can be decreased, and SeaWorld can continue to help marine animals.
