Let’s face it—practice doesn’t make perfect. However practice could land you a spot on varsity two seasons in a row. Alexa Gonzalez, a freshman at Clairemont High School, found this to be true. Gonzalez made varsity cross country and varsity soccer for the 2017 fall and winter seasons. How? With hard work, dedication, passion and of course, talent.

As a freshman this year, Gonzalez wanted to try new sports and when she saw how cross country could help her grow as an athlete, she took her opportunity. “I chose cross country because I’ve always enjoyed running and I wanted to get in better shape to help me make varsity soccer,” Gonzalez explained.

Gonzalez worked hard to constantly improve and landed herself a spot on the varsity squad. This would be her first varsity letter. Gonzalez found success and created new memories during her fall season. “I won some medals and was in eighth place in our league. It was a great experience,” said Gonzalez. She plans on returning for another cross country varsity season next year.

Gonzalez has played soccer for the past ten years. She currently plays on the Nott’s Forest FC travel team. Gonzalez’s talent for soccer can be attributed to her hard work over the years and her persistence to always become better. “I’ve played soccer since I was four,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve always played soccer, so I worked really hard to make varsity because it’s my favorite sport with a good team and good competition.”

Gonzalez has played almost all  positions for her soccer teams; she most frequently played defense for Clairemont ,girls varsity this year. However, her favorites include forward and midfield. After a long season, Gonzalez increased her strength as a soccer player. “I think I improved a lot. I always played the whole game and I got the Rookie of the Year award,” said Gonzalez. Next year, Gonzalez will push herself past this season’s limits and enjoy another varsity season.

Gonzalez has always been a hard-working, dedicated, and ambitious athlete. ”Right now I am on my travel softball team and my travel soccer team while playing high school softball. I also play high school soccer and cross country,” Gonzalez explained. She goes to at least one practice a day, sometimes two or three. “I hope to make varsity softball next year and then to keep improving and playing varsity for my sports all throughout high school,” Gonzalez said.

For athletes like Gonzalez, sports are their life; teammates are like family members, and the field is their second home. Gonzalez commented on her outstanding varsity streak as a freshman, “Being a double varsity player was pretty exciting. I got to play really good competition and it made me better.” Gonzalez will be back on her varsity streak as a sophomore next year. Could she be a varsity star in the rising?
