Clairemont has many talented football players. Among them there is a super freshman on the varsity team. Benjamin Buckmeier is a 6’1.5” defensive end. He loves playing football.

Benjamin, or Ben, has been playing football since he was four. His father, and previous coaches taught him how to play. He says it brings out his natural competitiveness.  “I like football because it allows me to get away from my problems and release my anger.”

Buckmeier gets treated differently on the team because he’s a freshman. He says the seniors don’t talk to him much and they’re not too happy with him being younger than the rest. He feels he has to do more work than the rest of the players because he’s not as “in shape” as the rest of them. Buckmeier says, “There’s more pressure on me because I’m not as good as the rest of them, and if I mess up they get mad at me.” In situations like this, he says it can be tough to do your best with all those (upperclassmen’s) eyes on you. His lack of experience puts him at a disadvantage.  Many people can relate to this in other areas of their lives.

Even more impressive, Buckmeier also says he plays for both Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity.

He enjoys practices with his younger friends, but prefers spending time with the seniors.

His goal in life is to sack the opponent’s quarterback.  Buckmeier mentioned, “I like doing  ‘tricks to opposing players. I also like’ focusing my aggression on the task at hand. In my case, getting around blockers.”

Buckmeier says he wants to continue playing throughout high school. He also mentioned he would like to play for as long as he can. So if there’s a career opportunity one can be sure he would take it. Everyone knows many talented athletes.  Now you know a bit more about a rising star at CHS freshman Benjamin Buckmeier.
